2008 Paris Auto Show: Kia Soul Hybrid Concept

The 2008 Paris auto show seems to be all about hybrids. Gasoline/fuel hybrid models from Europe, Japan, mass-market producers, SUV makers, and even luxury car makers are here in Paris, trying to be green and cool. Not to be outdone, Korean carmaker Kia is not only showing off its new Soul compact crossover SUV, but it's also presenting a Kia Soul Hybrid Concept.

Why it Matters

With the introduction of the production Kia Soul comes the Kia Soul Hybrid Concept version, which means Kia's Soul is a clean one. Before we check ourselves into a gulag for corny one-liners, we'll give you a breakdown on Kia's first foray into producing a commercially viable environmental vehicle (its Kia Sportage fuel cell concept was green, though everyone knows hydrogen is a pipe dream).

What it Looks Like

The Kia Soul Hybrid Concept is distinguished by its panoramic power folding fabric roof, which emphasizes the clear skies driving a hybrid helps maintain. A transparent hood and floor are also featured on the concept to expose to show visitors the Soul Hybrid Concept's powertrain and battery pack.

What's Under the Skin

Based on the Kia Soul urban crossover passenger car, the Kia Soul Hybrid Concept has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine and a 15 kilowatt electric motor. The hybrid powertrain is connected to a continuously variable transmission and is equipped with Hyundai's ISG (Idle Stop&Go) system that automatically shuts the engine off when the vehicle is stopped in heavy traffic. The battery also benefits from regenerative braking, typically found on hybrid models. Kia claims the Soul Hybrid Concept will get 48 mpg and contribute to reduced carbon dioxide emissions over the base Soul as well.

What We Think

The Kia Soul is already one of the more enticing vehicles Kia has introduced in a while, and the possibility of a Kia Soul Hybrid version makes it all the more attractive. The focus on producing green vehicle bodes well for the brand and we hope this finds its way on to show floors soon.
