Though Chrysler can lay claim as the inventor of the modern-day minivan, the VW EuroVan—and its much-loved predecessor, the Microbus—has been hauling families and their belongings around long before the minivan's existence. More than just mere transportation, the EuroVan can serve duty as a full-time delivery vehicle, a comfortable hangout for weekend tailgate parties or a mini home-away-from-home when ordered with the Weekender camping option.

The main reason most people buy a minivan is for space, and the EuroVan has that in spades. Its boxy, upright design gives it a nice low flat floor and tall ceiling. Seating is flexible, with the option of a center-row bench or captain's chairs and a three-person rear bench. All the seats in the EuroVan have nice tall headrests to protect against whiplash.

The Euro only has one sliding door, and it must be operated manually. The second- and third-row benches can be folded to form a large bed. Adding the Weekender option package gets you a pop-up roof with two-person bed, screens for the sliding side windows, a small refrigerator and a second battery.

For those that really want to get away from civilization, VW offers the EuroVan Camper. Resting on a longer wheelbase, the camper has all the features of the Weekender package plus a gas stove, external spray shower, stainless steel sink and larger refrigerator.

Power for all models comes from the VR6 six-cylinder engine. The engine has been specially tuned to provide more torque, an important factor for hauling around the added weight of the EuroVan.

In an attempt to bring the EuroVan within the financial reach of more buyers, the GLS models have been aggressively priced while still retaining much of their standard equipment. The MV camper option, on the other hand, can easily reach into the $35K range. Still, if you require more than just mere transportation to and from soccer camp, the EuroVan is a unique and functional alternative.
