If you like the idea of a Volkswagen hot hatch, but the GTI's front-wheel drive and 210 hp sound a little tepid to you, then check out the 2011 Volkswagen Golf R20. Arriving stateside in the spring, the R20 picks up where the previous R32 left off, but with a lighter engine and drivetrain and sharper handling. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is enhanced to 270 hp, the all-wheel drive system remains, and the car is also available with a dual-clutch gearbox with paddle shifters. Acceleration from a dead stop to 60 mph occurs in just 5.5 seconds, and the R20 is electronically limited to 155 mph; rumors say it would keep going an additional 10 mph if speed were limited only by wind resistance. Exterior visual cues give the new sixth-generation Golf a more aggressive look, befitting the most powerful Golf ever at a likely price somewhere north of $30,000.
