Insider's Guide: New Compact Car Debuts

A whole herd of intriguing small cars is on the horizon.

2010 Volkswagen Golf and GTI

On sale: Now

The 2010 Volkswagen Golf and GTI follow up on the highly successful previous generations in typical Volkswagen fashion: Evolutionary change that results in significantly better cars. For example, at first glance it's hard to tell the difference, but the new Golf sports sleeker lines. The interior is also upgraded with nicer materials and a more quality feel. Under the hood, a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine puts out 170 hp in the Golf, or buyers can opt for a 2.0-liter turbodiesel that gets up to 41 mpg on the highway and still offers plenty of performance with its 140 hp and 236 lb.-ft. of torque. The GTI soldiers on with a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 200 hp. All engines can be connected to a six-speed manual or Volkswagen's twin-clutch automatic. Prices run the gamut, starting in the mid-$17,000 range for a base Golf to the mid-$23,000s for a GTI.
