First Drive Q&A: 2010 Lexus HS 250h

The world's first dedicated luxury hybrid (is not just an upgraded Prius)

Give up fuel economy? I thought it was a hybrid?

True, it is a dedicated hybrid. However, not all hybrids are the same, and when push came to shove, it seems to us that Lexus bowed to the demands of a luxury buyer than a hardcore tree-hugging hybrid buyer. So instead of the relatively weak-kneed Prius drivetrain, the 2010 Lexus HS 250h gets a 2.4-liter four cylinder connected to an electric motor that's supplemented by a battery pack under the rear seats. Altogether the drivetrain puts out 187 hp, quite a bit more than a Prius, but still at the bottom of the pack in the Lexus lineup. However, it's the most fuel-efficient Lexus you can buy.
